Copic markers are expensive. It seems no matter where you look, the best price you can find for an individual Sketch marker is just over $5. The reason for this is that the Too Corporation, the company that manufactures Copic markers, actually sets the lowest retail price that any authorized Copic dealer can sell their Copics for. So $5.24 is the lowest price that you can get a Copic Sketch or a Copic Classic marker. (The Ciao style markers are less expensive.)
Thank you for your reply Christopher, you raise a number of very valid points. I think you have made my marker investment decision easier, and I will just have to save a little here and there so I can afford to buy a few at a time, rather than settle for less than the best. :)
As Judy (above) stated the only OBJECTIVE bottom line that is open to is the amount of money per area covered, quality, ergonomics (while very important) is highly subjective and therefore not amenable to hard analysis. Since even coverage data is very unlikely to be compiled, breaking it down as Christopher has is probably the best that can be done.
Additionally, including Prismacolor pencils in the comparison was a bit tangential, at best. Being a completely different type of medium, comparing them to markers has no validity. At that point, all color media would require inclusion, such as oil and water paints, pastels, ad infinitum. The choice of media is not always (or even often) driven by simple cost.

Picking a one of the best pens could completely elevate your artwork, but there are so many available that making the choice isn't easy. All the models out there are best suited to a different type of task, so we've asked a host of professional artists, designers and other creatives for their advice.
Wow! This has been extremely helpful already!!Sure. Hope I can become a member of your group!I have a bunch of copics and really just pick what I think would work well together. Wish I had learned this about a year and a half ago, could have picked more wisely!
This was VERY helpful. I have a small collection of copics and quite honestly have not had very good luck with respect to bleeding and shading, I am much more open to trying again and will be re-evaluating where the numbers fall when it comes to shading. I had an idea that the side by side numbers would work but sometimes they are too close a match. Thank you so much Jenn!
Jen THANK YOU so very much! I have been waiting to see someone with expertise like yours to post a picture of 2 copic blends! I do not own copics but really want to get started so this post was beyond amazing for me! I think I have pinned every picture you posted ! HA!
Copic markers are alcohol-based markers that many artists consider to be the best art markers you can get. They are available in over 300 colors and the ink is completely non-toxic with very little odor.if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined'){ez_ad_units.push([[250,250],'thebeginningartist_com-large-mobile-banner-2','ezslot_10',646,'0','0'])};__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-thebeginningartist_com-large-mobile-banner-2-0');Both ends of the marker have a different nib. Normally, one end has a fine nib for details, while the other end has a medium-sized nib for coloring larger areas.
Except for the wide marker, they are all double-sided and the nibs can be replaced when needed. The main difference between these four markers is the barrel size/shape, available colors, price, and the type of nibs.if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined'){ez_ad_units.push([[300,250],'thebeginningartist_com-large-mobile-banner-1','ezslot_8',163,'0','0'])};__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-thebeginningartist_com-large-mobile-banner-1-0');Copic Classic markersThe Copic classic markers (also known as Copic original) is available in 214 colors.
Although there is no fixed answer to how many Copic markers you need, a balanced set normally contains at least 30 to 40 markers. This is because you want at least one blending set in each color family, and complement that with some of your favorite colors.Copic markers are sold in sets of 6, 12, 24, 36 or 72 different colors. The sets of 6, 12, and 24 markers are really too small to function as a complete starter set. If you are buying a Copic marker set for the first time, try to go with a set of 36 or 72 markers or buy them individually.if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined'){ez_ad_units.push([[250,250],'thebeginningartist_com-leader-4','ezslot_16',144,'0','0'])};__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-thebeginningartist_com-leader-4-0');Best Copic colors to start withA good set includes colors from all the mayor color families. For smooth blending, you will need at least 3 colors in each family. In my opinion, the most useful Copic colors are:B000, B02, B04 (blue)BG11, BG13, BG15 (turquoise)BV00, BV02, BV04 (violet)E000, E02, E25, E27 (skin color)E33, E35, E37 (brown)G21, G24, G29 (dark green)R22, R24, R29 (red)RV63, RV66, RV69 (pink)V12, V15, V17 (purple)Y11, Y15, Y19 (yellow)YG11, YG13, YG17 (light green)YR04, YR07, YR09 (orange)The 37 colors above are in my opinion the best Copic colors to start with. You also want to add a colorless marker for blending and maybe a gray marker for easy shading. So in total that would be roughly 40 different Copic colors. 59ce067264
